Kripke mentioned that he and Dominique McElligott still email each other every few months, and he reached out early on while planning the final season to see if she’d want to come back for a quick one-day shoot.
Her response was totally pleasant but definitive: she has essentially retired from acting and was busy during those filming dates anyway.
Kripke noted it was a completely non-controversial, respectful moment.
Since they couldn’t get her back in person, the team decided to use recap footage and in-universe nods in Season 5 as an homage to her character—symbolizing a passing of the torch from Maeve to Annie, and ultimately down to the younger generation like Marie.
It’s a bummer we didn’t get to see her on screen one last time, but at least Maeve got to keep her quiet, safe, and happy ending off-grid!
