UW-La Crosse Chancellor Joe Gow has few regrets. Gow has only one regret about the recent videos that ended his 17-year career as president of the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.
He wished he hadn’t been introspective about this part of his life for a long time, fearing that his secrecy would make the high schoolers shun him.

After years of hearing UW leaders tout the importance of free speech, Gow decided to put the pledge to the test. He felt the timing was right, with months left in his presidency and plans to return next fall as a faculty member.

“I felt little by little that ‘let’s raise these issues for free and see how the company reacts,’ and now we know,” he said. Gow spoke to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel on Wednesday evening: minutes after learning of his dismissal.
The news surprised him.”I never thought we would get to where we are now,” he said.
“I thought at least the board, given its strong support for free speech, would be a little more transparent. But that’s clearly not the case.”
Gow said he doesn’t know how UW System officials knew about it. videos, all posted in the last two months.
No one in the UW System or the UW Board of Trustees asked him about his hobby, he said.
UW regents have defended free speech in recent years by issuing annual reports, conducting student surveys and holding free speech events around the state.
This month, Gow participated in a free speech forum sponsored by the agency, which included both Democratic and Republican lawmakers.
