10 dead in a racist shooting at a grocery store in Buffalo
BUFFALO – Ten people died on Sunday afternoon in a mass shooting at Buffalo Bakery, which police describe as a crime of racist hatred.
Law enforcement officials said that 18-year-old white man Payton Gendron approached a business in a regular city and shot dead traders and employees, killing 13 people, including officers.
The massacre ended when Gendron was arrested by police in front of a store. He was charged with first-degree murder on Saturday and released on bail. He didn’t blame himself.

Stephen Belongia, a special agent responsible for the FBI’s Buffalo office, said police were investigating the shooting as a hate crime and a case of racist violent extremism.
Buffalo Police Commissioner Joseph Gramaglia said 11 out of 13 people were shot dead by Black. Gramaglia added that the weapon, which was heavily armed and had tactical equipment, used a camera to disperse the attack and shot several victims in the parking lot before entering the store.
The longtime guard fired, but the shooter’s body prevented the shooting and the guard died in the collision, Gramaglia said. He called the security “hero.”
Four of the dead were store employees and six customers, police said. One of the clients was Ruth Whitfield, 86, who stopped at Tops after caring for her husband in her nursing home the day before.
“There were days when he didn’t spend time with her or take care of her,” said his son, former Buffalo fire marshal Garnell W. Whitfield. “It’s his angel.”
Now the family is looking for his father to make sure he is taken care of. “It’s something we can be proud of,” Whitfield said. “That we have a good job at hand.
