A powerful earthquake of magnitude 8.7 to 8.8 struck Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula on July 29, 2025, around 1:22 PM local time. The quake’s epicenter was about 136 kilometers east of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky at a shallow depth of approximately 19 kilometers.
This seismic event triggered widespread tsunami warnings along the coasts of Russia, Japan, Alaska, and parts of the Pacific, with waves up to 3 meters expected in Japan.

Videos captured by security cameras and eyewitnesses show violent shaking inside buildings, furniture toppling, balconies swaying, and people rushing outdoors barefoot in panic.
There were power outages, mobile network failures, and minor infrastructure damage reported in the Kamchatka area.

Some injuries occurred, but none were reported as serious. Notably, a woman was injured after jumping from a window during evacuation.
Following the quake, tsunami waves hit coastal areas including Severo-Kurilsk in Kamchatka and also reached parts of Japan. Authorities issued evacuation orders and emergency response protocols were activated.
